New COVID Variant in 2023 and Symptoms

The COVID-19 variant EG.5, known as Eris, is currently the dominant strain in California and the United States as a whole. Eris is a subvariant of Omicron, which is still the most prevalent strain in the world.

Currently, Eris doesn’t show signs of leading to more severe disease than other variants. Still, it may be more transmissible than other strains, so it’s important to get tested if you suspect you have COVID-19. Getting tested allows you to receive prompt treatment for symptoms and reduces the chance of spreading the virus to others.

Eris Symptoms

So far, Eris has shown to be similar to other Omicron strains. It mainly affects the upper respiratory tract and produces cold-like symptoms. If you’ve been infected by Eris, you might experience the following:

  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Dry cough

At Modern Urgent Care, we’re equipped to test for Eris and other COVID-19 variants.

How Long Does Eris Last?

You can expect Eris symptoms to last as long as other COVID-19 strains. With a mild case, you’ll likely feel better in a few days or up to two weeks. Severe cases can produce symptoms for several weeks or longer.
